Semaglutide & GLP-1 Weight Loss in Mission Viejo — Is It Right for You?

By Dr. Violeta Recalde, MD

If you've been hearing about semaglutide, Ozempic, Wegovy, or "GLP-1 medications" in the news and wondering whether they might be right for you, you're not alone. These medications have transformed the weight loss landscape — but there's a lot of misinformation out there. As a board-certified physician, I want to give you the facts so you can make an informed decision.

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 receptor agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1) are a class of medications originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes. Semaglutide is one of the most well-known GLP-1 medications. These drugs mimic a natural hormone your body produces after eating, which helps regulate blood sugar, slow gastric emptying, and — importantly — reduce appetite.

The result is that many patients feel less hungry, feel full sooner, and experience fewer food cravings. This isn't a willpower issue — it's a biological mechanism. GLP-1 medications work on pathways in the brain that regulate hunger and satiety, helping to address the root cause of overeating rather than just masking symptoms.

How Semaglutide Works for Weight Loss

Semaglutide is administered as a weekly injection. The dose is gradually increased over several weeks to minimize side effects and allow your body to adjust. Most patients begin to notice changes in their appetite and relationship with food within the first few weeks.

Clinical studies have shown significant weight loss in patients using semaglutide alongside lifestyle modifications. However, it's important to understand that this is a medical treatment, not a shortcut. The best outcomes happen when GLP-1 therapy is part of a comprehensive plan that includes nutrition guidance, physical activity, and ongoing medical supervision.

Who May Be a Candidate?

GLP-1 medications are not appropriate for everyone. Generally, candidates include adults who:

  • Have a BMI of 30 or higher (obesity), or
  • Have a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related health condition (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol)
  • Have tried diet and exercise without achieving sustainable results
  • Are looking for medically supervised support — not a quick fix

Certain medical conditions and medications may affect whether GLP-1 therapy is safe for you, which is exactly why physician oversight is essential. This is not something that should be obtained from an online quiz or a telehealth provider who has never examined you.

Why Physician Oversight Matters

The rapid popularity of GLP-1 medications has led to a surge of med spas, wellness clinics, and online services offering them — sometimes with minimal medical oversight. This concerns me as a physician. Semaglutide is a prescription medication with real side effects and contraindications. It requires:

  • A thorough medical evaluation before starting
  • Regular monitoring of your health markers during treatment
  • Dosage adjustments based on your individual response
  • A plan for maintaining results if and when you discontinue the medication
  • Screening for contraindications such as a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2

As a board-certified physician with over 20 years of experience, I bring a medical perspective that goes far beyond aesthetics. I understand how these medications interact with your overall health — your metabolic profile, your medications, your cardiovascular risk factors. Weight management is a medical issue, and it deserves medical expertise.
