How Chemical Peels Improve Skin Texture

By Dr. Violeta Recalde, MD

If your skin feels rough, looks dull, or has visible texture from acne scars or sun damage, chemical peels are one of the most effective ways to reset your skin's surface. They've been used in dermatology for decades because they work — and modern formulations have made them safer and more customizable than ever.

What a Chemical Peel Actually Does

A chemical peel applies a controlled acid solution to the skin, which dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface. As these old cells shed over the following days, newer, healthier skin is revealed underneath. The process also stimulates your skin's natural repair mechanisms, encouraging collagen production and cell turnover.

Professional peels use medical-grade acids at concentrations and pH levels that are meaningfully stronger than anything available in a drugstore product. The depth and type of peel determines what it can achieve — from a mild glow-up to significant texture correction.

What Chemical Peels Can Improve

  • Rough or uneven skin texture
  • Acne scars and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage and age spots
  • Fine lines around the eyes and mouth
  • Dull, tired-looking skin
  • Melasma (with appropriate peel selection)

Why a Physician Should Choose Your Peel

Not all chemical peels are created equal, and choosing the wrong type for your skin can cause problems — including worsening the very conditions you're trying to treat. This is especially true for patients with darker skin tones, active acne, or melasma, where an overly aggressive peel can trigger more pigmentation.

At MedGlo, I select the specific acid, concentration, and application time based on your individual skin assessment. I can also combine peels with other treatments — like Laser Genesis or HydraFacial — for a comprehensive approach to texture improvement.

What to Expect

During the treatment, you'll feel a tingling or mild burning sensation that lasts a few minutes. Afterward, your skin may look pink and feel tight. Over the next 3 to 7 days (depending on the peel depth), you'll experience light to moderate peeling as old skin sheds. It's essential to use sunscreen and avoid picking at peeling skin during this phase.

Most patients see noticeable improvement after a single peel, with optimal results after a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced several weeks apart. Learn more about our chemical peel treatments in Mission Viejo.
